Workshops

General Information

When you sign up for a Full Weekend Pass, you must choose a workshop stream. There will be 4 styles listed, to choose from:

  1. Lindy Hop
  2. Balboa
  3. Authentic Jazz
  4. Super Followers: for Ladies Only

When you register for the weekend, you must choose ONLY ONE stream and you can only take classes within your assigned stream. There will be four classes on Saturday and four classes on Sunday.

If you wish to register for the Lindy Hop or Balboa streams, we highly recommend finding a friend and registering as a couple. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be your dance partner and you won’t stay with this person in class. When you register as a couple – with one leader and one follower – your registration is instantly confirmed. But if you register as an individual, your registration will be automatically placed on a waiting list until a corresponding leader or follower registers as well.

Stream Descriptions

1. Lindy Hop

Description: Learn classic and new Lindy Hop figures and combinations to add to your repertoire, and work on your dance technique, connection and style. Classes will cover a variety of topics, and each stream will have classes with many different teachers.

Levels: There will be 6 streams of Lindy Hop, starting from Intermediate/Advanced up to Masters. There are no beginner level classes this year. All the Lindy Hop classes are for dancers who have strong fundamentals, are confident social dancers, have a growing repertoire of moves and are looking to seriously work on technique, style and vocabulary to take their dancing to the next level. There will be auditions on Saturday morning to assign you to your level.

2. Balboa

Levels: There will be two streams of Balboa, from Intermediate/Advanced to Advanced. All the classes are for Balboa dancers who have strong fundamentals, are confident social dancers, have a growing repertoire of moves and are looking to seriously work on technique, style and vocabulary to take their dancing to the next level. There will be an audition on Saturday morning to assign you to your level.

3. Authentic Jazz

Description: Solo jazz dancing is a fun, challenging and stylish dance form, which also gives you rhythm and style, precision and balance that applies to your partnered dancing as well. This stream will cover the variety of styles found in solo jazz dancing, from solo blues to classic jazz steps, softshoe tap to 1920s Charleston, and everything in between. You will learn new moves, short routines, work on style, musicality and improvisation, and improve your technique on skills important to solo dancing (such as spins and slides). Make sure you bring at least one pair of suede or leather-soled dance shoes, that are fairly slippery.

Levels: There will be two streams of Authentic Jazz, from Intermediate to Advanced. All the classes are for dancers with a good repertoire of classic jazz steps and 1920s Charleston basics, and your should already be comfortable with some of the well-known line dances such as the Shim Sham, Trankey Doo or Big Apple. There will be an audition on Saturday morning to assign you to your level.

Description: This is a cross-training course for Lindy Hop followers. It will cover topics including following technique, solo jazz, leading, conditioning, dance stretching, spins and turns technique, and other skills that will improve your Lindy Hop following. This stream is intended for ladies only.
