European Swing Dance Championships

About

The 3rd annual European Swing Dance Championships will be held in London, England on 25, 26 and 27 October 2013. This year we are delighted to announce our new home at the Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel, at Heathrow Airport.
Swing dancers from all nations of the world are invited to attend and compete in the dance contests, enjoy three huge nights of social dancing, or take part in workshops taught by top instructors. Registration is now open!




Location


All ESDC workshops, competitions and parties are being hosted in the beautiful 4-star Radisson Blu Edwardian hotel, conveniently located just minutes from Heathrow Airport in London. With dancing until 6am every night, and a full schedule of classes and contests all weekend, plus cheap food options on-site, we highly recommend you stay in the hotel to get the full ESDC experience! We have secured amazing discounted hotel rates, from just £30 per person per night (including full breakfast, free parking and free wifi!) when you book through the ESDC registration system. We have limited rooms available at these discounted rates, so book early to guarantee your stay.

Solo Divisions


Jazz Roots Battle

This is a solo dancing contest, in dances from the American jazz dance vernacular (Charleston, Black Bottom, vernacular jazz steps, soft-shoe, etc.). Dancers register as individuals and will dance to music selected by ESDC. Preliminaries will be in an all-skate format, leading directly into finals in a phrase battle format. Open to all levels.

Entry Fee: £15 per person

1st – £100
2nd – £75
3rd – £50

Solo Blues Battle

This is a solo blues and slow dancing contest. Dancers register as individuals and will dance to slow music selected by ESDC, in a variety of styles of slow jazz, swing and blues. Preliminaries will be in an all-skate format, and finals in a phrase battle format. Open to all levels.

Entry Fee: £15 per person

2nd – £75
3rd – £50



Social Divisions


Lindy Hop Jack & Jill

This is a social dancing Lindy Hop competition. Dancers register as individuals, and will be randomly matched with multiple partners in the preliminary rounds. Preliminaries will be in an all-skate format, and dancers will be judged individually. For the final round, dancers will be randomly assigned a single partner, and will be judged as a couple in a phrase battle format. Open to all levels.

Balboa Jack & Jill

This is a social dancing Balboa and Bal-Swing competition. Dancers register as individuals, and will be randomly matched with multiple partners in the preliminary rounds. Preliminaries will be in an all-skate format, and dancers will be judged individually. For the final round, dancers will be randomly assigned a single partner, and will be judged as a couple in a spotlight format. Open to all levels.

Couples Divisions




Showcase Divisions


For all showcase divisions, competitors select their own music and must provide it in an appropriate format to the Competition DJ at or before the event. No routine can be longer than 4 minutes in length.

Lindy Hop Classic Showcase

This is a showcase division, for a couple to perform a choreographed 2-4 minute Lindy Hop routine. No aerials, airsteps or lifts are allowed in this division. Open to all levels.

Entry Fee: £20 per person

Open Swing Showcase

This is a showcase division, for a couple to perform a choreographed 2-4 minute routine, in any partnered swing dance style. Acrobatics are permitted. Accepted styles include: Lindy Hop, Charleston, Balboa, Bal-Swing, Collegiate Shag, Blues and Slow Lindy. Later dance styles (eg: Boogie Woogie, Jive, etc.) will not be disqualified, but the judges will not be experts in those styles. Open to all levels.

Jazz Roots Showcase

This is a showcase division, for an individual or group to perform a choreographed 2-4 minute jazz roots routine. This division is for original routines of solo dancing styles from the American jazz dance vernacular (eg: Charleston, Black Bottom, vernacular jazz steps, Big Apple, soft-shoe, etc.). Acts can have any number of performers. Open to all levels.

Entry Fee: £20 per person

Swing Team Showcase

This is a showcase division, for a team of 6 or more people, to perform a choreographed 2-4 minute routine in any partnered swing dance style. Acrobatics are permitted. Accepted styles include: Lindy Hop, Charleston, Balboa, Bal-Swing, Collegiate Shag, Blues and Slow Lindy. Later dance styles (eg: Boogie Woogie, Jive, etc.) will not be disqualified, but the judges will not be experts in those styles. Open to all levels.

All-Star Divisions


All-Star Lindy Hop Jack & Jill

This competition division is designed to showcase your ESDC instructors’ social dancing skills! This is a social dancing Lindy Hop competition, open only to ESDC instructors, past and present, and special guests invited by the ESDC organisers. Dancers will be randomly matched with multiple partners in the preliminary rounds. Preliminaries will be in an all-skate format, and dancers will be judged individually. For the final round, dancers will be randomly assigned a single partner, and will be judged as a couple in a spotlight format.

All-Star Lindy Hop Couples

This competition division is designed to showcase your ESDC instructors! This is a social dancing Lindy Hop competition, open only to ESDC instructors, past and present, and special all-star guests invited by the ESDC organisers. Dancers register as couples and will dance to music selected by ESDC.

Prices

Choose from a Gold, Silver or Bronze Pass. Anyone holding a valid Pass is allowed to compete in the contests that day (contest entry fees are extra). You can register for competitions at the same time you buy your pass.
Payment in full is required at the time of registration. Payment is securely processed by Paypal (with Paypal you can pay with all major credit cards, and you do not need a Paypal account). UK bank account holders will also have the option to pay by bank transfer.


Hotel Packages


Hotel Packages: 3 nights £90 per person, 4 nights £115 per person

To get these special ESDC hotel rates, you must book your hotel package at the same time you register for a Pass. We have a limited number of these super cheap room packages available. Your hotel package includes full breakfast daily, free parking and free wifi. Within each room you will find a mini bar, in room safe, iron and trouser press, tea and coffee making facilities, modem connection, air conditioning and over 80 TV channels including movies.
When registering, you will select either a Double Room (1 double bed) or Twin Room (2 single beds), and you will need to provide the full name of your roommate. The room reservation is not confirmed until registration and payment is received from both room occupants. If you prefer a room for yourself, single occupancy rooms are available for an extra fee, and you will have this option during registration.

Workshops

When you sign up for a Gold Pass, you must choose a workshop stream. With a Gold Pass, your stream consists of an audition and 3 classes on Saturday, and 3 classes on Sunday. You will have a variety of teachers from our stellar lineup of international instructors (though of course, not every stream will get all the teachers). There will be a group audition on Saturday morning to assign you to your level. When you register you will be asked to answer some questions about your experience, to help us arrange the auditions. See the FAQ for more information about levels. Choose from:


Lindy Hop

Learn classic and new Lindy Hop figures and combinations to add to your repertoire, and work on your technique, connection and style. You will rotate partners in class. Classes will cover a variety of topics, and each stream will have classes with many different teachers.

Levels: There will be 4 streams of Lindy Hop, from Improvers/Intermediate to Advanced. There are no classes for absolute beginners this year.


Jazz Roots

Solo jazz dancing is a fun, challenging and stylish dance form, which teaches you rhythm, precision and balance. Classes will cover a variety of jazz roots styles and skills.

Levels: There will be 3 streams: Intermediate to Advanced. There are no classes for absolute beginners. You can prepare by making sure you are comfortable with some of the classic routines such as the Shim Sham, Trankey Doo or Big Apple.


Comp & Show

Work intensively on your Lindy Hop for performing and competing, with topics such as style, technique, tactics, choreography and acrobatics/airsteps. You must register as a couple – you will not change partners.

Levels: For Advanced Lindy Hop couples that dance and train together regularly, comfortable learning routines, and have experience doing airsteps together. Limited spaces.


Intensive

Focus on your Lindy Hop technique with your partner, in a small group setting. Get personal feedback from a variety of teachers, and hear different philosophies on the swingout and more. Register as a couple – you will not change partners.

Levels: For Intermediate-Advanced or Advanced couples that dance and practice together regularly. There will be more than one group, but very limited spaces.
